A JAPANESE CONCEPT MEANING A SENSE OF BEING

Ikigai – The Japanese Concept Of Finding Purpose In Life

At the Flow Recovery Retreat, your recovery comes first. When you put your recovery first, anything is possible. But what is recovery without meaning? Without purpose?  We believe recovery is so much more than sobriety. It is about finding your path to purpose or a sense of meaning in the world.  And this is where the Japanese concept of Ikigai enters our story.  Ikigai translates to “a reason for being”.

Ikigai fuses your passions and your strengths into a vocation. It’s an internal compass that guides you on the journey of life. It’s the existential fuel that drives you to wake up in the morning.

We find our ikigai at the intersection of four core questions

We find our ikigai at the intersection of four core questions:

  • What do you love?
  • What are you good at?
  • What does the world need?
  • What can you be paid for?
The secret to astonishing longevity

Ikigai has been posited as the secret to the astonishing longevity of the people of Okinawa. Love for what you do contributes to a long and happy life.

It corresponds with the psychological concept of flow. This is a state of deep mental absorption in an activity that channels your strengths and your passion. Flow states make a substantial contribution to overall wellbeing.

Ikigai is essential to finding and sustaining a sense of purpose.

At the Flow Recovery Retreat, we believe that your recovery is essential to finding and sustaining a sense of purpose. And having that sense of purpose or meaning will vitalize your recovery.

Your entire counseling team helps identify your strengths, incorporate them into your habits and routines and then channel your energy into finding your ikigai.  When you leave us, you will be embarking on a path of purpose in your personal and professional life and enthusiasm for your recovery.

This is your time to build a life worth living.

OUR METHOD

More Than Just A Sober Home

By combining key theories and techniques from performance psychology, positive psychology, and addiction counseling we have created a hybrid approach to the recovery process.

Performance Psychology

Performance psychology is the study of enhancing human performance. What is the mindset of the people who execute at the top of their game? Athletes, business leaders, coaches, parents, or even people in recovery…the people who seem to perform well under pressure and find ways to overcome challenges. We have designed a curriculum around these principles. We explore purpose and meaning, cultivate intrinsic motivation, create distraction control strategies, increase focus and attention, utilize visualization and imagery and teach the neuroscience behind creating enduring habits and routines.

Positive Psychology

The scientific study of what is right, rather than what is wrong with people. It includes research on hope, optimism, happiness, strengths, courage, wisdom and other positive aspects of human functioning and flourishing. We focus on enhancing your resilience. It acts as armor when you have temporary setbacks, or in recovery, feel the temptation to drink or use drugs again. By focusing on a strengths-based model, we build up your resilience, by developing a sense of autonomy, feelings of self-efficacy and meaningful social connections (see reference here).

Addiction and Trauma Counseling

Continuing your progress from primary treatment, you will work with our licensed therapist to build a strong and trusting relationship that allows you to explore your challenges with addiction and trauma and develop coping skills, healthy new beliefs, a strong self-concept, and behaviors that will carry you forwards on your new path.

TESTIMONIALS

What Our Clients Say

Hear what our clients have to say about our counselors.

Sarah Savidge, Nutrition Coach

I learned a new approach to eating which changed my relationship with food. Food shouldn’t be shameful or restrictive. Sarah opened my eyes to new ways of thinking, doing and being which has helped me step away from old crash dieting behaviors.

I thought I’d have to overhaul my diet and lifestyle, find a new job, and really commit to the emotionally uncomfortable act of regularly getting some physical activity with friends.  Within a few months, however, it became clearer the most important changes for me to make were mental ones. With Sarah’s encouragement and support, I really started to shift the way I thought.

This has been such a beautiful, deeply transformative 6 months. I used to pride myself almost exclusively on achieving financial or professional goals. Recently, I’ve started to take much more joy and satisfaction in achieving a healthy, sustainable balance.

Yuriko Takato, Addiction and Trauma Counselor

My life has been enriched by Yuriko’s support. Every session I’m forever grateful for having found a wonderful human being who passes on and shares her depth of knowledge and wisdom.

She is authentic, encouraging and caring!!! Once you start this voyage of discovery with her you wont want it to end.

I’ve been on the path of  “me” search (research)  for over two decades. But the relationship would become much deeper as I learned to ground myself, stay present, and feel the fullness of my experience.

I continue to commit myself fully to self-inquiry through all of Yuriko’s approaches. I hugely recommend her to anyone who has the desire to delve in and go deep. Yuriko, thank you. Xx

“Flow goes over and beyond to further educate to those of us who want to get deep into recovery and explore life after putting it all down. It has inspired me to change my outlook on work and to really live life well. The performance psychology course has been life changing, the individual therapy and life coaching I received at Flow was second to none. I feel great comfort to still be in touch with the team at Flow to support my journey back to the UK and to help me implement and integrate what I learnt. The relapse prevention course really helped me understand myself more and has given a very valuable tool. The location is fantastic, there is loads to do in the area and the sober community locally are welcoming and fun. I highly recommend picking up the phone and speaking to Matt if you are reading this, it is a unique and fantastic place.
